How to Make Pom Pom Garlands

Say yes to the pom poms. You know you wanna.

I’ve been making pom poms for Christmas decor since 2015 in our first home. We were house broke and didn’t even own a tree. Let alone Christmas ornaments! That’s when I discovered that a skein of yarn made a TON of pom poms and they were the most adorable and affordable DIY to cover up our tree. Let me show you how to make these easy DIY Christmas ornaments!

Materials

  • Yarn

  • Scissors

  • Cardboard

Step 1

Cut a piece of cardboard into a small square shape. I cut mine to a 3.5” x 3.5” size.

STEP 2

Start wrapping your yarn around the cardboard. Do this about 35 times. If your yarn is thinner you will need to wrap it a few more times.

Step 3

Slide the yarn out of the cardboard template. Cut a piece of yarn about 8” long. Then secure your bundle of yarn by tying a knot at the middle of your bundle of yarn.

Step 4

Turn your bundle of yarn to it’s side and cut the loops that you’ve made. You will be left with a very bedraggled looking pom pom. We’re going to fix that in the next step!

Step 5

This is the fun part. You’re going to give your bedraggled pom pom it’s hair cut. Trim the edges to create a round shape. The closer your trim to the core of your pom pom, the denser and fluffier it becomes!

TIP:

Rotate your pom pom while you trim and look at it from all angles.

Be sure not to snip off the two long strands that you used to tie your pom pom together. This will act as the loop for your ornament!

Hang them as an ornament on your tree by tying the two long strands together. Or you can string them on a long piece of yarn or twine to make a garland!

I love how homey it looks! You can change the colour of your yarn and do alternating patterns on a garland.

This DIY is so easy to make and it makes such a fun addition to your holiday decor!
